Should I just hire an in-house marketing director to handle my law firm marketing?

A: That certainly is an option, but it's important to remember some of the potential drawbacks to hiring an in-house employee:

  • Like other employees, it can take a great deal of time and money to advertise and recruit qualified applicants for a law firm marketing director position.
  • Once qualified applicants are found, the screening process can be arduous, with multiple phone calls and in-person interviews to narrow down the list.
  • Once the hiring decision is made, there are obviously salary and benefit considerations. While law firm marketing director salaries vary a great deal depending on the geographic area and the size of the law firm, a marketing director for a firm typically will have a salary in the $60,000 - $150,000 range, with even higher amounts for bigger metropolitan areas.
  • Hiring mistakes (which happen frequently, even with a thorough interview and screening process) can be extremely costly in terms of dollars, time and energy wasted.

A better option for some firms is to work with a virtual marketing director, or VMD, to implement and oversee the firm's marketing.  A VMD often will be much less expensive than hiring an in-house marketing director.  Additionally, many VMDs work on a month-to-month basis or on a project-by-project basis, eliminating much of the risk involved with hiring traditional employees.  Plus, an experienced VMD will have references from several law firms that he or she has worked with in the past.
